Westfield High School Physical Education Course Offerings

PE0000 Physical Education I
1/2 CR.
Grade 9
Physical Education I is offered to freshmen. This semester course includes team sports and fitness activities.

PE2000 Physical Education II
1/2 CR.
Grade 10
Physical Education II is offered to sophomores. This semester course combines Adventure Education and lifetime fitness activities.

PE4300 Physical Education III & IV
1/2 CR.
Grade 11, 12
This is a program which emphasizes team and individual sports. Activities include basketball, team handball, aquatics, racquet sports, flag football, weight training, aerobic and fitness activities, and other lifetime activities.

PE5001, PE5002 Physical Education Student Leaders
1/2 CR.
Grades 11, 12
This course is open to any Junior or Senior who has received a grade of 85 or better in his or her Physical Education classes. Students must demonstrate characteristics such as leadership, maturity, rapport with peers, respect for others an understanding of the physical education program, and a willingness to assist students and instructors. Selection to this program is made on the recommendation and selection by the Physical Education Staff only. Applications are available in guidance.

PE6000 Sport Exemption
0 CR.
Grades 11, 12
Students may be exempt from the Physical Education requirement under the following criteria:

A. Must be a bona fide member of a team during the year of exemption.

B. The exemption must be approved by the Head Coach, Athletic Director and Principal.

Approval of this exemption does not guarantee membership on a team. If the sport season is not completed, the P.E. exemption will be voided and the student will be responsible for completing all Physical Education requirements.

Westfield Voc Tech Physical Education Course Offerings

1041/1401/3041/4041 Physical Education

0.25 or 0.5 Credits
Physical Education is a required half-year course for all freshmen. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors may elect to have physical education as part of their schedule for a full year.

Physical Education includes developmental lessons that challenge students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills involved during individual, team and lifetime sports. Physical Education promotes and improves physical fitness, wellness and cardiovascular capacity. The program provides opportunities for positive social interaction and enjoyment of sports. Other benefits include healthy competition, acquiring proper values involved with winning and losing, and the development of social and co-operative skills. Safety practices, knowledge of rules, procedures and sportsmanship are all areas of emphasis in the program.

Class requirements and grading policies include evaluation of effort, attitude, participation, preparation and performance in class. Test, quizzes and homework assignment are other measurements used in grading performance. An example of the freshman half-year curriculum: Term 1: Orienteering, Soccer, Tennis (singles), softball, Ultimate Frisbee. Term 2: Basketball, Touch Football, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Introduction to Weight Training and Fitness Walking.

HEALTH EDUCATION

Introduction: Health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being which permeates every aspect of human development. Health education promotes positive health practices, self-esteem, and self-control, as well as the ability to make informed lifestyle decisions. The goal is healthy, responsive learners who can build communities, resolve conflicts, and promote everyone’s optimal well-being. Courses taken in this department can be applied to the Health graduation requirement.

HE1000 Health Education 1/2 CR. Grade 9
This half year course consists of study in the concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention; consumer health, environmental health, family life and sexuality, growth and development, nutrition, personal health (emotional, social and physical), conflict resolution and substance abuse and addictive behaviors. Students will learn to access and analyze information and develop goal setting, decision making, interpersonal communication and advocacy skills to promote health enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce risk. This is a required course for graduation.
